Getting around Long Island in New York State

Long Island in New York State is about 190 km from east to west and about 30 km north to south. It is possible to drive to Long Island across the western end where it joins the mainland near New York City. However, this is the most congested area, the roads charge tolls, and the route is indirect for people coming from eastern cities such as Boston.

For these reasons, many tourists coming from the North choose to transport their automobiles across Long Island Sound. It is possible to park a car on a ferry, enjoy the boat ride, then drive off upon reaching the other side. One ferry route travels between Bridgeport, Connecticut and Port Jefferson, Long Island; the other between New London, Connecticut and Orient Point, Long Island. Port Jefferson is in the mid-point of Long Island in a densely populated area. Orient Point is on the more rural eastern tip along a scenic route with many vineyards.

Long Island’s many highways and freeways are densely populated with cars. The island is served by a commuter railroad and a bus, but travel is difficult without a car. It is recommended to bring yours!
