Restaurant reviews: Kastoori, London, UK

The Thanki family first opened the doors of the Kastoori restaurant in Tooting, south London in 1987, and their East African influenced Gujarati dishes have been delighting diners ever since.

Located on the vibrant and cosmopolitan Upper Tooting Road, Kastoori serves up fresh, exciting and authentic dishes to a diverse clientele. All of the dishes are exceptionally good value and are exquisitely spiced, thanks to years of practice and expertise.

Although the whole menu is vegetarian, each dish is bursting with flavour and is hugely satisfying. I’ve taken several meat-loving friends here and they’ve all not only said that they liked the food, but also agreed that they would certainly be coming back. They hardly noticed that their dishes did not contain any meat.

One of my favourite dishes are the dahi puri that are on the starters menu. These small spheres are guaranteed to delight. Containing chick peas, potato, a sweet and sour sauce and yoghurt, they certainly pack a visual and flavoursome punch.

The list of mains is extensive and it can be hard to know where to start (one of the reasons so many diners keep coming back). A good option can be to order a selection and then to share them around your table. The dosas are a great choice, although they are deceptively filling, and watch out for the daily specials too, as these are consistently excellent. There is a different special for each day of the week, although I’m yet to have sampled all of them.

If you still can’t decide what to order, then the thalis could be the way to go. These dishes provide a selection of curries, chapati or puri, rice and dahl, and also include a dessert, all for a very reasonable price.

As with the food, the drinks menu is also very good value, with the usual selection of Indian beers and also some wines. In the soft drinks section, the mango lassi is particularly tasty.

If you’re still hungry then there is also a somewhat smaller selection of desserts on offer. Personally, I would rather fill up on more starters and mains, than leave room for the deserts, although the pistachio kulfi does always go down well.

At Kastoori, the staff are always attentive and happy to describe their dishes in more detail, should you wish to ask. The service is prompt and dishes are always freshly prepared.

Hardly surprisingly, Kastoori is a very popular restaurant and booking on weekends at least is generally a good idea.

The nearest tube stations to Kastoori are Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway, which are both in zone three on the Northern Line.
